"Fun-employment" in the Age of the Single Cat-lady
What else does one do during their job search?
A little bit about me…
When’s a better time to start writing a blog than when you’re in between jobs?
I am technically still employed (I have a freelance job), but I am deep in the weeds of a hunting for a full-time, salaried position. Having stability in our current climate does seem like a luxury.
And I am most definitely one of JD Vance’s dreaded single cat ladies.
See my cats pictured below:

I am attempting to make the transition out of education (fingers crossed), but I want to stay engaged in active conversations about the things I’m interested in and passionate about.
And even though I keep so much of my writing to myself—I am a writer. I write like I breathe—it’s out of habit. Okay, actually maybe let’s not be precious about this we all write like we breathe—texting is our main mode of communication. BUT I am active in my notes app (like the walking talking stereotype that I am).
So, I’m here to try this out. To write about the media I consume—because I consume A LOT.
What can I expect to read about?!
I want this to be a space where I can write and share the things that interest me, and cultural ideas that I care about.
I am such a broad connoisseur of all media and art. I just can’t get enough. For a sense of the scope:
I am obsessed with Bravo and will be writing about The Real Housewives franchises that I watch (and perhaps I will link a pod my roommate and I did about Vanderpump Rules. We started it before #Scandoval!!)
I just finished reading A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms (and got to the dreaded conclusion where George R.R. Martin predictably wrote more to come. Will this man ever conclude a GoT property?)
Somewhat related, In between applying to jobs and writing cover letters, I started listening to a podcast called The Rest is History-which is two academics covering various historical events or people for fun! (maybe I do miss elements of academia). For example, I am finishing their 4 episode series about Henry V.
BUT my current standby pod is The Big Picture-a movie pod that truly determines whether or not I will see a movie in theater.
(My guy Sean Fennessey once liked a comment I tweeted at him during the pandemic-I felt SEEN).
Embarrassingly, listened to The Tortured Poets Department so many times that Spotify suggested I let their AI DJ take the wheel instead.
Rude, Spotify. I had much more to ponder from the genius that is Taylor Swift.
The point is I will literally watch and listen to almost anything. I just like art, and people who think about and talk about art and media nonstop. I am a NERD.
I’ve also traveled a lot in the past three years-so maybe I’ll write a bit about that here as well. We’ll see what the people like!
